Advent Daybook 17: O Wisdom, come!

Pray: Heavenly Father, make me more like Jesus as I sit in your loving presence today. Please guide my thoughts and impressions by your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Read:  Proverbs 8:1, 32-36; Isaiah 11:2-3a; I Corinthians 1:26-31; John 1:1-5

"Does not wisdom call, Does not understanding raise her voice?

... And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.”

*

"The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord."

*

"Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

*

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not."

Sing the first verse of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel as today's prayer:

O come, thou Wisdom from on high,

Who orderest all things mightily;

To us the path of knowledge show,

And teach us in her ways to go.

Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

Do: Today, spend 15-20 minutes in complete silence, listening for God.

Because of Christ and the Holy Spirit, we are able to converse with our Creator God. Today, put yourself on the listening side of the conversation. Don’t strive or analyze;  just sit in quiet and notice what comes to your mind and heart. Trust God to speak in love and truth.

Make space for the adoration of our God
